Sedation Dentistry

To help your child feel comfortable during his or her visit, Cool Smiles Pediatric Dentistry offers sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide, conscious oral sedation, and outpatient general anesthetic.

Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as laughing gas and is used for its pain-blocking and reducing effects. Nitrous oxide is used in our practice to aid in comfort and relieve anxiety. It encourages relaxation to enable the doctors to complete the required dental work.

Conscious oral sedation is done to induce an altered state of consciousness, grogginess, and relaxation. This helps minimize pain and discomfort, though patients are able to speak and respond throughout the procedure.

General anesthesia is an appointment completed at the Red Deer Hospital to alleviate pain and anxiety by rendering a patient unconscious during the dental procedure. For patients who experience extreme dental fear or children that require major dental treatment, sleep dentistry is an option that ensures their utmost comfort while under specialized care.
